YOGA IN AFRICA
Posted On 03/21/2008 02:59:51

Krishna is back in Africa!

The weather is wonderfully hot, and the papayas are in full bloom.  Ghana is enjoying the aftermath of our YOGA Summit and Health Fest last August.  I keep finding people who haven't practiced yoga in several years, who are ready to get back on track.  There is a professor in the English department at Legon University, and a president of another smaller college who are deeply into yoga, that I met recently.  Each one recognizes the up hill challenge to get Yoga recognized by the general population, but all believe it is essential to keep up.

TOGO Kundalini Teacher's Training Course

The course starts today, and there are 14 enthusiastic students ready to learn and share the health giving benefits to people in their communities.

The members of 3HO Togo are very happy because Sadhu Singh, NY sent them lots of CD's, tapes, and yoga manuels.  Thanks Sadhu! I brought them turbans, Karas, and yoga magazines.  Thanks to all who helped make this happen.  Keep your contributions coming, folks, they mean a lot over here!

Thats all for now.  Will check in again later!

Peace, Krishna Kaur

Posted On 02/05/2008 18:30:56

YOGA for Youth is participating in the LA Marathon on March 2nd as a fundraiser for the very first time.  The whole idea is very exciting, as we gather on Sunday morning and walk, run, bike or skate the 3k, 5k, 1/2 Marathon or the full 26k.  We are soliciting participants and sponsors from our friends, family and colleagues to join us or pledge an amount for each mile or killometer we complete.

Log on to and download information and registration forms.  You will click on LA Marathon site to register with them, the get back to us.  You'll see.  The instructions are quite clear.

Come on out and join us!  Walk as much or as little as you like.  Get your friends and colleagues to contribute tax deductible contributions to YOGA for Youth for your efforts.

It will be a nice activity to promote health, meet new friends, and raise awareness about the service of YOGA for Youth.  We will, of course distribute information about our IABYT Summit and Tenth Anniversary Summit and Gala Event July 30 - August 3rd.

If I can do it, you can do it.  And, I am certainly going to give it a good try!

Can we count on you?  Let's do it!

Peace and Light

Ghana Summit Incredible!
Posted On 08/12/2007 11:50:14

Wonderful!

What a treat to be with yoga teachers and students from Togo, Gambie, US, Canada, Ghana and else where.  Dr. Kumordzie was wonderful with his Yoga of Sound.  Dr. Delle was great discussing Complementary Treatment for people with HIV/AIDS. Nichelle was delightful with her talk on Health and Fitness.  The nutritionists were awsome with their information on food, poitics and culture.

The early morning Sadhana and Sun salutation workouts were beautiful as were all the youga classes, workshops and panel discussions.  Stay tuned for more stories and photos about this journey of over 50 folks from the US and Canada, and what we have learned from our fellow yogies.

Love and Light,

Krishna

Meditation reduces crime in the city
Posted On 07/17/2007 12:44:01
I just read this story and thought how appropriate it is for who we are and what we do to create Peace in the City. Check it our, and let me know what you think!
Peace,
Krishna
We all know that our planet is in a precarious state and that we humans must make even the smallest contribution towards it's recovery. Shelly Yates started the Fire the Grid project after a miraculous near-death experience with her young son and herself. During the near-death experience she was 'guided' on how to help save our planet. As Shelly says, "Our world has entered a state of chaos and the Earth can no longer support our present habits." The request is simple: meditate/pray/contemplate for one hour from a loving and giving state of mind on July 17 at 11:11am Greenwich Time, 6:11am CST, 4:11am PST. See more about this at: www.firethegrid.com You can see Shelly telling her story (in several parts) on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqUAluDvuU4 For correct time in your time zone, visit: www.worldtimeserver.com >From around the world let's join together for one hour and do our part for our home, the planet Earth. This study sought to prove that violent crime would decrease in Washington, D.C. if a large group of participants meditated to increase coherence and reduce stress in the District. The study was a success, the crime rate dropped. SPIRIT in GHANA
Posted On 06/12/2007 11:36:12

Ghana is Great!  Every time I go there, I get greater and greater insights into the wealth and value of that culture.  During this trip, much of our discussion focused on communicating the benefits of yoga into a mind set that differed somewhat from ours.  We were asked many questions about the 'spiritual' part of yoga and we welcomed the lengthy discussions that followed.

When we talk about yoga in the West, we usually define it as the unification of body, mind and spirit through the practice of movement, postures, breath, mudra, meditation and philosophy.  The word 'spirit' to many of us means connecting ourselves consciously to our inner reality, our inner power, our divine selves, and that part of us that vibrates beyond the physical.  Spirit and spirituality in the yogic world has nothing to do with religion.  Yet, we experience our religeous practices being enhanced by a yoga discipline as our spirit is elevated through meditation and the inner stillness that follows.

Practitioners of yoga hail from many different faiths, including Christian, muselum, jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Bahai, Yoruba, and many others.  But, there are still many community folks who fear that yoga would conflict with their religeous practice.  Fortunately, many more are realizing that yoga is about living a healthy lifestyle and unfolding our individual gifts and talents more effectively. People of all cultures and beliefs practice yoga and meditation and benefiting greatly from it.

In Ghana and other countries in Africa, the word 'spirit' or 'spiritual' is still too often tied to images of sorcery, magic, and mischievious manipulation of peoples minds and behavior.  We are continually seeking to correct the connotation about yoga and spiritual practices so as to separate them from the negative experiences of many people on the African continent. It is certainly a worthwhile effort as there are thousands and even millions of Black people who could benefit greatly if they were open to explore the practice from a place of neutrality.

The health benefits of yoga are being proven every day.  The need for ways to get healthy and stay healthy naturally with out the total dependance on medical systems that are financially out of reach, is great.  I encourage all who have some experience with yoga to become a more vocal advocate for the practice with our people, as it will do much to heal our communities and uplift the quality of our health world wide.

Come join us in Ghana this August 8-12th as we conduct the first ever Yoga in Ghana Summit and Health Fest, in part to celebrate Ghana's 50th Anniversary of independence, and secondly to initiate our "Celebrate Life", Health Empowerment Project.  This project will demonstrate the way yoga helps people with chronic diseases, like hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and HIV/AIDS as a complementary therapy.

I AM BACK IN GHANA!
Posted On 05/18/2007 12:56:36

Yes, folks, I am back in Ghana with our Ghana family of yogis. I'm enjoying the hot weather and beautiful people! The momentum is gaining toward the Summit in August, which from the 2nd to the 19th for us travelers from the West, and from the 8th to the 12th for the local folks.

We seem to be making good headway in getting the message out that yoga is an art and a science and is open to all faiths. But, go ahead and keep the light on these efforts, as prayer is the way to move mountains.

We met with the director for the Ghana AIDS Commission, the African American chiropractor that is doing great things here, Markus Mannas who really wants to collaborate with us.

We are having a press conference on Monday where 20 media people will be in attendence. All is good by God's grace...

Peace!

Black Yogies in Ghana
Posted On 05/09/2007 22:16:02

AKWABA!  WELCOME....!  Last minute yogies are jumping on board the Yoga in Ghana trip as the excitement continues to build toward this historic journey. Just try to imagine over 200 African and African American brothers and sisters doing yoga and meditating together in the land of our origin as a people, and the origin of yoga in general!

Try to imagine the power of all that incredible spirit filled energy filling the space and over flowing into the rest of the country and abroad.  Can you see the joy in our faces?  Can you hear in our voices how deeply moved and uplifted we all are?  There is absolutely nothing more powerful than a group of Black folks doing yoga together and spreading the wealth of knowledge we have with each other.  Well, what ever you are able to imagine, imagine it being 10 times greater than that!

We still have a few months before we leave on August 2nd, but everyone is so there already....!  If you are not able to go with us, we invite you to participate with us by doing something everyday we are over there (Aug 2-19th) as a kind of blessing for the success of our mission in Ghana.  It could be a special meditation during which you send a little light our way.  It could be dedicating an asana practice to our work over there with a prayer that hundreds of African brothers and sisters will be practicing asana as well. Just think of something that would inspire you to be with us in spirit.

Before we go, you can even donate money for us to gine in support of the growth of the Ghana Chapter of IABYT, or purchase yoga mats, CD's or what ever.  All contributions are tax deductible.  For more information call our office:  323-931-5040.

If you know someone that is going, feel free to send them some little something to leave there on the land for you, or to give to a village elder from you.  Anything..... just try to be a part of what is happening.  We want you there with us.

Love and Light!
