Maya Breuer
Biography
Maya Breuer learned first hand about the benefits yoga can have on ones’ life. She made the decision to become a teacher of yoga after a life-changing weekend at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Massachusetts. It was during a difficult time in her personal life - as Maya tells the story- “the practice of yoga did for me what no substance, product, doctor, support group, family member, friend or lifestyle change could do”; yoga introduced her to her inner self. That was it. She was on her way to becoming a Yogini.
After traveling to India where she studied at the Lakulish School in Gujarat to deepen her Sadhana and to study the advanced practices of yoga, Maya incorporated the art of living and teaching Yoga into her life. In 1999, she created the Retreat for Women of Color, a weekend program offered at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health that introduces minority women to the practice of yoga and its healing benefits for a healthy lifestyle. Maya Breuer designed the retreat to provide women of color with an outlet for their daily stress and reintroduce them to indigenous, ancient practices and wisdoms.
Maya practices seva through her community service offering Yoga program for those who are in need--groups such as: women of domestic violence, people in recovery, and homeless women’s in shelters. It is Maya’s dream to have a Yoga instructor in every community of color in the United States to help fight the diseases and life style challenges that are debilitating people of color. This is her Yoga Revolution.
Today Maya lectures, offers retreats and workshops, trains and certifies teachers at the 200 and 500 hour level. She remains focused on encouraging and educating minorities to explore the healing benefits of yoga. Maya is a featured author in Stephen Cope’s Will Yoga and Meditation Really change your Life. She is also a Senior Kripalu Teacher included in the Bantam release Kripalu Yoga on and off the Mat by Richard Faulds, 2005, and she is a member of the Kripalu Board of Trustees.
Her book, Soul Yoga will be released spring, 2008
